I'm here for a week for work! Sweet! But..... I hate casinos. There's gotta be some other cool shit to do here. Anyone got any ideas? Nazo, you can chime in on this.

Zach, listen to me very carefully. Do I have your attention? I want you to read this, and then I want you to go eat this burger:

Finally, I'm ready to talk about the burger.
Le Burger Brasserie
Pretty damn tasty burger in the Paris Hotel. I kept getting the feeling while I was there that some of my friends (ddddave, Grant's Tomb, my brother) would love the place as much as I did and that some of my friends would fucking hate it with the whole of their beings (zom-zom, mostly). It is a sports bar with plasma screen tv's fucking everywhere. I could see ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Classic and FSN without having to rotate my head more than 120 degrees. It was a two minute walk to a bookie where I bet on the Twins to take the series while waiting for a table.

But the best part is that the waitresses were all wearing blue, white and red "French" versions of the Hooters uniform, minus the tights. Blue hot pants! Tight striped shirts! Pigtails!

I had the bleu cheese burger with bacon on the whole egg roll. It was in the top 15th percentile of non-fast food burgers that I've had. It was reasonable priced. They put some kind of ranch dressing powder on the waffle fries.

Who wants to fly to Vegas with me for a night of partying and eating here? We'll reduce expenses by not wasting money on a hotel. Fly in, party, fly out. I have thought about this burger every day since I've been back and there is so much more on the menu that I want to try.

Go to the Peppermill! Seriously, the coolest bar I've ever been to. And if you can disable any latent aversion to girl drinks you may have, order a pina colada there. Amazing!
Hasselhoffenbrau
11/13/07 4:19 PM
Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville"
palm trees, stuffed parrots and coconut shrimp shooters with awes jamz being sung by Parrotheads from across the globe. buy a shirt!

Toby Keith's "I Love This Bar" bar
knucklehead douchebaggery with a side of jingoism. eat freedom fries and the Ford Truck sando (kentucky bourbon pulled pork) - buy a shirt!

*************
in all seriousness (if you eat animals)- go to the Palm restaurant in Ceasar's Palace for lunch one afternoon and get the filet mignon daily special for under $25.
It's a true bargain for the quality of the food and service.
the tiramisu is stellar as well.

I like the drink, but the gambling doesn't do anything for me. Except lose money.

So, I'll stick to drinking in areas without horrible "IT'S VEGAS BABY!" types stumbling about.

There is somewhere just outside the city proper where you can pay $ to shoot vintage guns and such. (I can find out more the co-worker who did this, if you're really interested).

If you like to vinyl hunt Las Vegas has some fun record stores. There is Record City - a handful of them around the city. It's somewhat like a chain but each location kinda specializes in certain genres. Then there is Big B's off of Maryland Parkway right off of UNLV's campus. They are usually priced well and I always find neatO records there. Also, I must mention if you like crappy fast food with a haphazard mexican feel Del Taco is the place for you.

Wow, board. wow. thanks for the suggestions! I haven't logged on in two days cuz i've basically been spending all my time at KNPR and the Las Vegas Springs Preserve testing audio lines, helping reporters with file transfers, blahblahblah it's basically been all work and no play so far. I had no idea people were dropping this many suggestions. I think on Saturday after Weekend America airs I'm gonna take a desert road trip. Tonight and tomorrow night are my chances at fun, other than the get up at 7 the next day part.

I haven't even hit the pinball museum yet, but IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. tomorrow. I went to the incredible Cowtown Guitars yesterday; i'd never imagined i'd see that many vintage gibsons in a strip mall.

Thanks Dusty, I'll try to eat that burger tomorrow. There actually was a public radio donor event at the Paris today, but I couldn't make it; we were trying to upload files to St. Paul from KNPR, and their internet connection was balls slow. ah well. this town is super weird. the strip malls have strip malls in them. The bars are cheap but the thrift stores are expensive.

I think Sat night i'll wander solo around the strip and stare at things. I'll find the cheapest, nastiest burlesque show in town and see some real vegas bubbies.

Or i'll go on a vision quest in the desert. or a high score quest at the PHOF.

Skids, you should fly down here tomorrow. let's stay up all night on Saturday.

I'm going to Las Vegas next week for a conference. The last time I was there was about 15 years ago. Anybody know about some fair priced good eats or cool things to do? The pinball hall of fame is the only thing on my list.

Anything would be helpful.

looks like I'll be there for a few days in late april for work... I'll be watching this thread.

a co-worker said there's a good "neon graveyard" that's worth seeing. dunno if that's the actual name (but can find out). he said it was pretty interesting, there's a tour with some history of the strip, etc.

This city is super expensive, at least everything on the strip. Every time I stopped walking I started losing money. The Bellagio, the Mirage, and Treasure Island have cool shows out front.

It's a fun city for a couple days, but in hindsight I wish I was rich.

Yeah, I saw that featured on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations. More info here.

I loved the outdoor escalators! The Venetian has "moving sidewalks", the entire strip should be moving sidewalks.

Herz, they closed our pool for the winter. The deep end IS the place to post up.

There is a new KISS mini-golf course opening up across from the Hard Rock on March 15th. Might be an entertaining way of killing an hour.

I do not understand how the words "KISS" and "mini-golf" can be used in the same sentence, yet you are still looking for something to do...

Unless "Skynyrd" and "BBQ" is more your thing -- then go to Excalibur.

Bumpin' this shit again.

Gonna be there Wed thru Sat to hang with Chance and the rest of Polica and to take in the sights. Anything newish that hasn't been mentioned here. (Double Down... Check! Hash House.. Check! Tittie bars... Check! Lots of gambling... CHECK!!!)

We're stayin at the Cosmopolitan, on the Strip next door to the Bellagio, so we have all that stuff at our doorstep. Otherwise, all three of us going, as well as Chance and co. are pretty much Vegas Virgins and any other recommendations are welcome.

There is an Asian restaurant in the Monte Carlo that (at least last year) had half price sushi IF YOU SAT AT THE SUSHI BAR (that part is important) in the afternoons M-F. Well worth it.

The whole City Center complex is cool -- my kid and I are going next week and will definitely check it out.

stinkfinger,
there's an iffy record store - record mart - at the end of the strip (north side) -- take the monorail to the last stop & walk further north a few blocks.
nearly everything is overpriced, but I found a few gems.

hash house was ok...

that french restaurant on the strip (paris casino?) had a good breakfast

The five things my son and I are going to accomplish next week in Vegas:

Gopher Football game
KISS Mini-Golf
Pinball Hall of Fame
Freakin' Frog bar with 1000 different beers and 600 different scotches (kiddo won't be accomplishing this one until he is older)
Stratosphere Observation deck

In the downtown area, there is apparently a video game bar that is the parent company of the one supposedly opening in Minneapolis.

Everything I have read about the Heart Attack Grill sounds like it is way overrated.

Sports book at ARIA is a pretty sweet place to watch a game.
