I don't think there is yet. I've been out of town for most of the last two years guitar teching for The Hold Steady. I manage to keep pretty busy keeping these things in perfect running order:

IMAGE REMOVED - CLICK TO VIEW

The band is now taking a break (FINALLY!) and I'm back in Minneapolis to run my studio with Airloom and finally have some time with my girlfriend. But that doesn't mean I'm too busy to help you sort out your guitar problems. 24 hour or less turnaround, cheap rates ($25 bucks for a spot-on setup, can't be beat!), nice dude.

My shop/studio is at 4534 Nicollet Ave. You can drop your axe off or I can pick it up. PM me on the board, send an email to dustin.miller@mac.com or call me at 612-790-1753. There are a pile of folks on this message board who I've done work for and maybe they'll bump this thread by naming themselves publicly.

Thanks, Tom, for letting me use your message board as advertising space.

Dang, airloom. What happened to this Tele? It looks like the Sleaze used it. Electronics fixed, bridge rebuilt, Cheeto dust removed from the neck, nut slot filed to fit grown-up strings, neck tightened (seriously, the neck was about to fall off!), strings changed and intonation set. Now we're even for lunch yesterday.

What's the issue with the truss-rod? You sure it's broken?

Mr. Burger knows his guitars. If I didn't do my own I would have dude work on mine.

12/18/09 6:03 AM
pee.yay- I'm at the studio at least from 9-5 every day. I'm an easy guy to get ahold of and can pick things up or arrange a drop off most any evening. I'll bet we can take this to PM-land and work something out.

zom-zom: That's high praise and very kind. Let me bring over some alcohol so we can nerd out catch up this Christmas season.

12/18/09 6:04 AM
When do you need to have a guitar refreted. I have dimples in my frets around the cowboy chords (123). Is it expensive, how long can I put it off for? Will it just start to fret-out is that when I know?
burgerdog
12/18/09 6:14 AM
Deepending on the depth of the dimples your options are basically:

1. If your intonation in kumbaya chord land is fine and things aren't fretting out then you're fine for now.
2. If the dimpling is minor and not terribly deep just having those frets crowned and filed should get your intonation back in line.
3. Replace the offending frets if things are real bad.

Back when I still owned my 68 SG the frets were in pretty rough shape all the way up and down the neck. It had clearly been gigged and toured and played hard for 40 years. Couldn't get an open-G chord to sound good. Light buzzing here and there. I took it to Woody and he replaced the first three frets and crowned the rest of them. I think it cost me something like $120 but the guitar played like a fucking dream afterwards. On the flipside, the Jazzmaster we have at the studio has frets that look similarly disastrous but it plays just fucking fine.

Dear Burgerdog, can you answer quick questions on the board? If so, how does one cure tuning posts that wobble in their "mechanisms"? The nuts that sit against the face of the headstock doesn't tighten the sloppiness insides of the "thingamajiggys" up, do they? I have recently purchased a guitar that is rather abstract in it's notions of the concept of holding a steady tuning, and am hoping I do not have to replace the tuners.

Sorry I had to whip out the true guitar luthier lingo.
burgerdog
12/18/09 7:37 AM
1. If the back of the tuning machines can be opened easily you'll find a little gear inside connected to the peg post. There is a screw in the center of that gear. If it becomes loose you'll get that wobbliness you describe. That might fix your problem. Other tuning machines just start to loosen up over time and have a bit of play to them. In general I've found that unless something is Really Fucking Wrong with the tuning machine that a proper stringing and correct tuning technique will solve almost all problems with tuning stability.

What kind of guitar are we talking about here?
marqueemoon
12/18/09 7:43 AM
Regal D45 dobro. I'm at work now so I can't see, but I don't remember an obvious way to open the machines from the back. Just two small phillips screws that I assumed were the mounting screws for the machines.

Between what I perceive to be the sloppiness of the tuners and also a few misfiled string slots in the bridge (wound G string catches and scritches and pings when being tuned), the tuning kind of floats.
burgerdog
12/18/09 8:26 AM
Get that nut filed, make sure the nut slots are lubed up, tighten up the machines if possible and it should be a just fine instrument.

OMG I'm a dick - I completely spaced on gushing about how awesome of a job burgerdog did on my babies!!!

I know there are great guitar shops around town, but with them you don't always get 100% satisfactory customer service, or a thorough explanation of what and why you may need some work done. Burgerdog got you covered.

If you're in need of anything from a simple tweak to a needed repair, PLEASE let burgerdog be your man.

My "axes" <cringe> have never felt or played better! Although I gotta remember to ask him how to maintain/tighten up that high-maintenance-byotch of a string bender - I've been racking on that shit for days now... So fun to play around with!
mumblecrust

Dear Burgerdog:

This is my #2 guitar:
IMAGE REMOVED - CLICK TO VIEW

It's a Hondo 2. People might hate, but It looks, plays, and mostly sounds, like a '50s strat. It needs some electrical help. Specifically, of the two "tone" knobs, only one seems to change the tone. The other controls the volume(?) when the 3-way pickup selector is on certain pickups. I don't like it.

I'm wondering if you could help me with this problem, and allow me to watch while you do it.

about how much would it cost to fix a bridge on a acoustic guitar? the white thing the strings go over is cracked and one part of it is sagging down so it's all fucked up

yes just the saddle...it is an Aria Pro II, a japanese (i think?) guitar maker of the 80s...decent/low-mid quality acoustic
burgerdog
10/19/11 3:36 PM
Drew- I was splitsville before you dropped it off. I'll dig in this weekend.

Mags- I might have a saddle around that'll work. In that case super cheap. If not, it'll still be pretty reasonable. Hard to give a quote without seeing it.

hey burger, i have an old classical acoustic guitar that needs a new tuning peg for the low E.
any idea what that would run me? the little cog that the actual peg spins is missing a tooth, so it won't catch, which results in me not being able to tune the string.

Bring it down and let's sort it out. My prediction: inexpensive.

burger -
would there be any good option for upgrading the stock pickups in a mexican made fender jazz bass (circa late 90s)
burgerdog
2/08/12 4:21 PM
Thanks, corngrid! That thing was a treat to work on. I felt bad that the switch wasn't salvageable because the rest of that wiring was all original. Such a pretty pretty bird.

Mags- the expensive and guaranteed option is a set of Duncan Antiquity pickups. I put some in a 63 Jazz Bass last year and they do sound incredible. The less expensive (but more experimental!) option would be to have me wind a set for you, which I could do for around $100 for the pair. Give me a call and we can talk about what you're looking for and get something that'll make you happy. I've got another set of Jazz pickups to wind in the next couple weeks and could just as well make two sets.

Bdog built a p90 for me and I just tried it out through a garbage sounding amp and it sounded amazing. Can't wait to try it through a nice amp. It sounds like chuck berry and johnny thunders made a baby in my guitar. Have him make you a pickup. I've played 2 of his pickups so far and both of them were drastically better than what the stock pickups.
burgerdog
5/12/12 8:04 PM
Nerd talk on MMM's pickup- P90 style wire, 11,000 turns of 42AWG plain enamel wire. Alnico II magnets. We tried Alnico V's (too bright), a single A2 and a single A5 (really sweet color, but still brighter than he was looking for), and ended up with a pair of A2. I look forward to mixing magnets in future pickups. About 10% hotter than Gibson's stock P90.

Also, I just did this today:

<img src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/560620_10151709071445335_855405334_24440793_1199099713_n.jpg</img>

My single pickup Melody Maker. I replaced the stock single coil with a P90ish pickup I wound earlier this year. The neck pickup is a Teisco Gold Foil that I've had banging around the shop for almost ten years. Added a selector switch, routed the wiring channel, got it all up and running in a quick couple hours. They've got a very similar output (both pretty hot) and I'm glad I just used a single master volume and tone instead of one for each pickup. If anyone is interested in trying out some of the pickups I'm building or discuss a custom wind/rewind/repair shoot me a PM or phone call.
