Used to have a red guitar
‘Til I smashed it drunk one night
Smashed it in the classic form
As Peter Townshend might
Threw it in the fireplace
Left it there a while
Kate she started crying when she saw my sorry smile
Red guitar was made of wood
It could not take the heat
Red guitar it caught on fire
And the damage was complete
It burned until all that was left
Were six pegs and six strings
Kate she says, “You are a fool.
You've done a foolish thing.”

R.I.P Phil Wood
Posted: March 19th, 2010 by Jeff Lockwood
News broke early this morning that Phil Wood, the sealed-bearing hub and bottom bracket innovator who founded the company that bears his name, passed away at his farm in Iowa earlier this week. He was 84 years old.
Wood founded Phil Wood & Co. in 1971 to sell maintenance-free hubs. The company grew over the years and continued to create innovative cycling components like bottom brackets, pedals, tubing, disc brakes and a really cool professional-grade spoke cutting and threading machine, which you can see in action in this video clip.
Wood sold the company in 1991, and moved to Iowa in 1995 where he remained away from the glitz and glamour of the bicycle industry. Lavada, his wife of fifty years, preceded Wood in death in December of 2009.

Peter Steele - Type O Negative vocalist
whoa whoa WHOA -WAIT A MINUTE? PETER STEELE?
Damn, what a shock. Heart failure at 48. He finally returns to the Earth's sweet embrace.
posing for Playgirl takes ten years off yr life
I hope he didn't die.
Too bad. Steele made some decent music. Not recently really, but Carnivore and the early Type-O shit was good. Also Type-O always put on a great live show. A sad day for early-90's metal heads.
Type O missed a show with Pantera years back because Steele's dad died of heart failure.
"Everyone I Love Is Dead".
pitpat: Better than Playgirl, he did a spread for Dirty, which was a short-lived skin mag that attempted to appeal more to the underground rock world. Each issue had a pictorial featuring some band dude or other, among others Lemmy and Buzzo (the latter shoot I actually got to witness firsthand, but that's a story for another time). Peter was the only one I saw who was willing to appear nude, with two girls, no less.
Type O was a guilty pleasure sort of band. Total B-movie kitsch stuff. But yeah, they were a good live band and the Sabbath-esque grooves were pretty hard to deny at times.

Arakawa, artist who tried to halt aging, fails miserably.
This is fascinating, though:
Their most recent work, a house on Long Island, had a steeply sloped floor that threatened to send visitors hurtling into its kitchen. Called Bioscleave House (Lifespan Extending Villa), it featured more than three dozen paint colors; level changes meant to induce the sensation of being in two places at once; windows that seemed too high or too low; oddly angled light switches and outlets; and an absence of doors that would have permitted occupants even a modicum of privacy.
All of it was meant, the couple explained, to lead its users into a perpetually “tentative” relationship with their surroundings, and thereby keep them young.

This is my great-aunt Clara. Shared because it's a great obit and she was pretty awesome.
Clara Frances Mines, 98, of Richmond, formerly of Sedalia, died Friday, July 16, 2010 at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.
She was born October 8, 1911, in Cooper County, a daughter of Herbert Joseph and Helena Rose (Weber) Hoff. On June 3, 1933, in Sedalia, she married Harry Edward Mines who preceded her in death on August 2, 1958.
Clara was a 1929 graduate of Smith Cotton High School. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She worked at Lyle's Cleaners for years. Clara was a vivacious woman and enjoyed life to the fullest. She enjoyed cooking big meals for her family and was affectionately known to them as "Old Grandma". She took in ironing as a hobby and also did alterations. She enjoyed a beer every day. She loved birds, butterflies, bells, flowers and angels, and had collections of all these things. She loved to dance, do crossword puzzles and tell jokes. One of her favorite sayings was "I was born a Catholic and a Democrat".
She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Richards, and her husband, Dean, of Richmond; five grandchildren, Joel Richards, Kristy Richards and Jill Richards, all of Richmond, and Chris McGuire and Diane McGuire, both of Hardin; four great-grandchildren, Justin Richards, "her ray of sunshine", Jared Richards, "her baby", Brianne McGuire, "her only great granddaughter", and Stevan McGuire, "her quiet one"; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Gertrude Haller, Cecilia Gammon [my mom's mom -Ed.] and Ann Jackson; and a brother, Herman Hoff.

Giant hay bale kills former ELO cellist
(Reuters) - A giant bale of hay has killed a founding member of the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) band after it tumbled down a hill and crashed into his van.
Cellist Mike Edwards, 62, died after the 600 kg (1,323 lb) bale rolled down a steep field in Devon, southern England, smashed through a hedge and careered on to the road.
He died instantly in the freak accident on Friday afternoon.
Police said they used photographs and YouTube footage to identify Edwards and are investigating whether the bale may have fallen from a tractor working on farmland near the road.
Edwards, who played with the band between 1972 and 1975, is believed to have swerved into another vehicle as the bale crushed his cab.

Dude, that General Vang Pao was a fucking character. I caught an article about that coup attempt when he got busted.
His reputation was deeply stained, however, when federal agents arrested him and 10 others in June 2007 for allegedly planning to buy about $10 million in illegal weapons for a violent, anti-Communist coup in the Laotian capital of Vientiane.
His reputation was largely stained?? You don't get to talk shit until you're planning a fucking coup at the age of 80.

Nice write up on Sargent Shriver, by Bob Herbert.
"He was the founding director of the Peace Corps, the signature success of Kennedy’s New Frontier. He founded Head Start, created the Job Corps and Legal Services for the Poor, and gave us Volunteers in Service to America, which was the domestic version of the Peace Corps. He served as president and chairman of the Special Olympics, which was founded by Eunice Shriver. Indefatigable and unrepentantly idealistic, Mr. Shriver may have directly affected more people in a positive way than any American since Franklin Delano Roosevelt."

Brian Jacques, 71. I loved the shit out the Redwall books when I was a kid. I tried to revisit them a couple of years ago and they were nearly unreadable, but still, thanks for captivating my elementary-aged imagination. The idea of an epic fantasy series about Christian Knights who are also field mice still sounds like a good one.

Weird. Just found my copy of "Seven Strange and Ghostly Tales" by Brian Jacques and realized it was signed, "To Maria". Neat.

Man, I just saw that about Brian Jaques as well. I loved him as a kid. He came to Iowa once to give a reading and I made my Mom drive me to Iowa City so I could have him sign every single one of my books. His accent was so thick I could understand almost nothing of what he said - he was a really sweet guy though

Nice words from Tim Skyscraper:
Sitting here sipping a Bogle Pinot Noir and thinking of Patty Bogle, founder of Bogle Vineyards,
who passed away last Friday after a bout with Leukemia. I never had the pleasure of meeting her,
but I've enjoyed a lot of Bogle wines. The Bogle family has probably made as many great $10
California wines as any other company over the past 20 years, and they never sold out.

I just listened to one of his stand up bits on Marc Maron's show and really enjoyed his interview with Marc Maron. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen. The dude is intense. He also has a great comedy CD out on Stand Up! records. He was HIV positive but I guess he died of a heart attack.

"I don't usually talk about this next thing," he says after a moment. "It makes me look like one of those religious nuts who sees Jesus's face on a tree trunk."
Bang pauses again. "It's just kind of hard to believe."
He begins another sentence, lets it trail off. He sighs, and then dives in.
"So, one day, I'm supposed to go into this pawnshop -- it's in Baltimore -- to buy a gun so we could do a bank thing we'd been talking about. I get inside and I see this violin hanging there in the corner and -- here's the part that's hard to believe -- I hear it calling to me. It's not saying anything, not words or anything, it's just like the violin wants my attention.
"So I ask the shopkeeper how much for the violin and when he says 30 bucks, I bought it instead of a gun.
"When I got back out to the car, the guys were very pissed off at me. They thought I'd lost my mind. They were thinking that I'd been in Vietnam and I might snap so they left me alone all the way home to the Bronx. But I never did the bank thing with them. One of them got killed and another one got shot outside the bank.
"I wasn't there because of the violin. It saved my life."

That story is incredible.
This is from an article about how the director of the Berlin Zoo wants to have Knut the polar bear stuffed and put on display:
“I don’t want to see him stuffed,” said Triste Dittrich, her eyes moist as she passed around color snapshots of Knut, as if handing out photos of grandchildren. “I want him to live on in my head as he was before, when he was alive.”
Doris Webb sat on the next bench, her arms crossed against an afternoon chill and a reporter’s question. “Are you going to make fun of us, too?” she asked, her Knut button proudly pinned to her chest.
“There are a lot of people who say, ‘How can you be so upset when so many people have died in Japan?’ What do you know about how I feel about what happened in Japan? I’m grieving about a very special bear.”

That's his track. First thing I ever (unknowingly) heard by him.
Also, The Wire made an article from '06 on him available to enjoy on the internet. What a wonderful, eccentric man.
“Then I bought myself a real player piano. It was really expensive but I was so horny to have it. I made a lot of compositions for piano without any idea of how to actually play it and I know Glenn Gould would be crying if he could hear me. He was upset because whatever he tried to compose he always got lost in his own head. He was paralysed by technique. Not me! I thought to myself, ‘You shit, here you are composing for the piano, you should print this music out, and maybe someone could play your compositions.’

On the night of 29–30 April 1944 she was parachuted into the Auvergne, becoming a liaison between London and the local maquis group headed by Captain Henri Tardivat. Upon discovering her tangled in a tree, Captain Tardivat greeted her, remarking "I hope that all the trees in France bear such beautiful fruit this year," to which she replied, “Don’t give me that French shit.

Her French companions, especially Henri Tardivat, praised her fighting spirit, amply demonstrated when she killed an SS sentry with her bare hands to prevent him raising the alarm during a raid.

Oh holy shit. I went to bed last night reading about the Supreme Court appeal and I did not think I'd wake up to read that. Seeing that name in this thread now really just stunned me.

went to a sad but happy memorial in duluth. our coworkers mom died suddenly, probably of natural causes, in her sleep at 56. still trying to get my brain wrapped around that. that's not an age where you would expect that to happen. like at all. the memorial was great. lots of people having fun and talking about her and drinking. my coworker's sister, who i had never met was like "oh you are so and so from work, _____ always talks about you". i felt really good that i went and got to hang out with my friend. a couple times, around xmas or when i was havin a rough time, my coworker would bring me gifts and be like "oh i was talking to my mom about you and she wanted you to have these cookies she made" and stuff like that. she had requested a very non-religious ceremony, but i don't think the person doing the funeral really got it. it seems like it is reallly hard to find a non-religious officiant for things like this. like ever. same problem we had when my uncle died.

Bert Jansch.
I had hoped to see him live one day but now never will.
Fuck!
And I missed him opening for Neil Young a couple years ago.
Whoa, terrible. I listen to his music weekly, if not daily. Brilliant guy.
I saw that opening set for Neil Young and it was incredible, but totally wasted on a huge room of middle-aged suburban couples talking through it while they loaded up on $8 beers. I was rapt from up in the balcony but the majority of the audience could not have been more indifferent.
jeez, this is really sad news
Yea, I feel very fortunate to have seen Bert open for Neil, and yes unfortunately the crowd was not attentive at all.

I'm Howard Womack from Radio K's "By Any Means" and "Go Low". I've announced that I'm going up to St Cloud State on Thursday to do a 2 hour tribute for Ol' Dirty Bastard since this Sunday will be the 7 year anniversary of his death. But now that Heavy D has died today, I've talked to Derek Ehlert (Urban Invasion's host) and the station manager at KVSC, and now I will also be doing a tribute for Heavy D on thursday. 7pm til 10pm will be for Heavy D and 10pm til 12am will be for Ol' Dirty Bastard. Remember, this will be on KVSC, 88.1 FM of stream it on your iTunes account by clicking "Radio" in the upper left hand corner. Then click on "college/university" and then click on KVSC to hear it. I will still be doing "By Any Means" on Wednesday night on Radio K. After that, I'll travel up to St Cloud on Thursday.

Jimmy Castor, funk legend, died today. :(
The Jimmy Castor Bunch is one of the best funk bands ever, I think they were somewhat popular in their day but seem to be mostly forgotten now. I couldn't even find anything about his death on google news, but it seems to have actually happened, twitter/facebook/etc are blowing up with it, and he's not famous enough right now to be the target of a hoax.

Jonathan Keith "Jack" Idema, whom some of you may remember as the bizarre con man who ended up in Afghanistan, running a 'private jail and torture center'.
In late 2001, he popped up in Afghanistan, claiming to be, variously, a humanitarian aid worker, CIA operative and hired advisor to the Northern Alliance forces who fought with U.S. troops against the Taliban.
He conned one Afghan warlord into believing that he was training some of the warlord’s men on behalf of the U.S. government, then instead rented their services to journalists who needed security details.
Several journalists were taken in by his offers of information and security, and he successfully used his fake covert operator act to woo at least a few female journalists, said Robert Young Pelton, author of “Licensed to Kill: Hired Guns in the War on Terror.” The book includes a chapter on Idema that plays almost like comic relief amidst tales of mercenaries.
Eventually his play-acting in Afghanistan took a more serious turn than just hoodwinking Dan Rather or foisting fake Taliban training video on cable news producers.
At some point, he and a rag-tag band of followers he dubbed Task Force Saber 7, began kidnapping innocent Afghan “terror suspects” and torturing them, ostensibly to find the location of Osama bin Laden and other terrorist leaders.
In 2004, Afghan authorities arrested him and two American accomplices, Brent Bennett, another former soldier from Fayetteville, and Ed Caraballo, a freelance videographer.
In an Afghan court, Idema claimed that he had been operating with the support and knowledge of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and other American officials.
U.S. and Afghan officials repeatedly said he had been operating on his own.
The trio was convicted of kidnapping and torture, and they were sent to Pul-e-Charkhi prison outside Kabul.

This Kelly writeup by Jerry Saltz is better.
Super sad. I guess he'd been struggling not just with depression in general, but a deep dissatisfaction with having to become a "factory" in order to keep up with the demands of the international art market, rather than be able to work at his own pace without it being a huge production.
I guess his lady also broke up w/ him recently, too, which didn't help any.

My dad wrote this great piece about my godfather, Ollie. We should all have friends like this.
"Ollie had a bad heart valve replaced when he was young, something very risky at the time. He came through, but was told that he would never be able to be active. He went on to be an All-State football player, and of course, a ski instruct...or at Boyne and then on to Alaska. A few days ago he was in pain, went to the doc, then to the hospital. They replaced the valve, but he had a bad infection, and died. We still don't know all the details; however, as Susie [my mom] said, a light went out in this world when Ollie died. Of note, he taught us to ski, to bird watch, and the whole range of outdoor science. We photographed together, canoed, camped, skied, fished, mushroomed (Ollie the expert in wild edibles) did five Alaska raft trips together, and I could go on and on. He had just retired from teaching, and had great plans so we hear. His network reaches to many corners of the planet, and his former students went on to many successful pursuits. He was one of the most inspirational people I knew."
I need an Ollie.

I clicked on that MTV Ben Affleck / Jennifer Garner link. She's a decent actress, a total babe, but I've NEVER seen a picture of her where she looks like someone who would be pleasant to be married to.
Andrew Brietbart? I guess I just hope for him that he finds in the afterlife the what he sowed in the world. That should be punishment enough that I don't need to dance on his grave or wish him any greater ill than that.

Wonkette, under the headline ANDREW BRIETBART DOPS DEAD:
American blog owner Andrew Breitbart is dead. He was 43 years old, and reportedly died of “natural causes” in Los Angeles early this morning. We knew Breitbart — “we,” meaning many of us who have written for Wonkette, including young Riley Waggaman, pictured above at left — and he was a pleasant enough goofball in person. Breitbart was also a talented writer of headlines (it really is an art!) who worked anonymously for many years as Matt Drudge’s assistant on the West Coast. What he is known for today is the vile collection of websites that includes “Big Government,” and his rambling, slurring appearances on broadcast media.
Breitbart leaves behind a wife and four children, along with hundreds of idiotic half-literate bloggers for his various websites who share his zeal for mindlessly attacking every non-wingnut aspect of life on Earth but lack his amiable personality.

Great grandma Angeline RIP. Whiskey water, hot pants, a cabin on the lake, a deck of cards, and playing piano and singing at the party all night long. That was her. Rad lady. 96 is a damn good run, though.

Whiskey for everyone. We'll sing Sweet Angeline. So let's be thankful now not sad, for the little love we've had.

Thanks, dudes. I didn't know her well. She had a major stroke when I was just a kid, like 7 or 8, and it ruined her ability to make sense. Last I saw her, just a month ago, she still wanted to show me her wedding ring and a picture of my great Grandpa. Cute as shit.
She was real good to my dad when he was a kid and my grandma always spoke highly of her as a mother. My great grandfolks are the reason I've wanted a cabin for as long as I can remember. I'll have one someday in their honor.
Anyway, I hope you're having a Windsor water, listening to Astral Weeks, and playing Don't Get Mad with Great Grandpa somewhere. You were a good egg.

Maurice Sendak: On Life, Death And Children's Lit

"I have nothing now but praise for my life. I'm not unhappy. I cry a lot because I miss people. They die and I can't stop them. They leave me and I love them more. ... What I dread is the isolation. ... There are so many beautiful things in the world which I will have to leave when I die, but I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready."

in today's NY Times:
To the Editor:
There once was a scared little 15-year-old girl. She had been neglected and sexually abused for several years and was finally ready to tell someone about it. It was one of the scariest things she had done in her life.
She was taken to the police station, where she was made to sit around for several hours while the adults argued about her future. The more she tried to stay still, the more nervous she became. She needed something to calm her down, so she decided to explore the book rack.
She came upon what looked like a children’s book, but the pictures on the cover did not look like anything she had ever seen. As she thumbed deeper and deeper into the story, she was transported with Max, and forgot about her world for just a little while.
The rest of that day was a blur, but one thing was sure: she could do this. She had always known that the world was full of big scary monsters, but with the right combination of strength and trust, any of those monsters could be tamed. It was O.K. for her to be angry. She didn’t need to hold it in anymore.
That little girl has since grown up and moved on from her past, but that book, “Where the Wild Things Are,” will always hold a special place in her heart.
So let the rumpus begin, Mr. Sendak. It’s your turn to roam where the wild things are. I’ll never forget what you did for me.

Pete Cosey RIP
Best known for his playing with Miles Davis from 1973-75 (Dark Magus, Agharta, Pangaea, Get Up With It and a million bootlegs), he also played on Muddy Waters' Electric Mud and After the Rain (which is a better album, IMO), Howlin' Wolf's The Howlin' Wolf Album (aka "This Is Howlin' Wolf's New Album") and a bunch of other stuff. In more recent years, he guested with Burnt Sugar on a few albums and had a band called Children of Agharta in which he re-interpreted '70s Miles work. An amazing guitarist with a totally unique sound

Goddamnit, I am so bummed about Doc. This is my most 9/11 musician death since at least Waylon. I remember singing his version of "Tennessee Stud" with my pops when I was eight years old, and I haven't stopped listening to him since.
All-time great voice, a major innovator on the guitar, and a singular figure in American music. Plus, his show at the Cedar three or four years ago was a top-5 show I've ever seen. Hair-raising.

Not sure if Roar/the Classical/anyone else was familiar with him, but Faruq Z. Bey passed over the weekend. As the obit says, he was an icon in Detroit's avant garde music scene, and founder of Griot Galaxy. I only saw him once, with the Northwoods Improvisors a few years ago. His health was failing even then, but they were outstanding across the board. I had been meaning to dig for some GG material, as I used to hear the name and wonder what it was all about, but never got around to it. Anyway, no time like the present.

You cranky, eccentric old fool. Thank you for writing my favorite book ever.

I'm sure I told the story before but when my sister Laurie's husband was turning 50 she sent Jerry's beloved hardcover of Fahrenheit 451 to Ray's management in hopes of an autograph. Birthday came and went, but like a month later back the book came, inscribed and doodled and annotated from front to back.
Sorry to hear of Faruq Z Bey's passing. I first heard him on an American Tapes cd-r from '99 or so, sitting in with Graveyards...definitely one of my favorite AT releases. Then I followed him backwards to Griot Galaxy and forwards to the Northwoods Improvisers.
I knew I could count on you knowing who that was, Roar. That 2009 performance was the first time I had seen the Northwoods Improvisors in 20 years (and the first with Faruq). The bassist, Mike Johnson, used to work at the only record store in town, and was always quite a wellspring of information about jazz. I believe he still has a weekly radio show, called 'Destination: Out', on Michigan Public Radio.
re: Bradbury - we were also just discussing his short story "The Last Night of the World" after seeing 4:44 at the Trylon last night, for obvious reasons.

People look at me like I should have been like Malcolm X or Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks. I should have seen life like that and stay out of trouble, and don't do this and don't do that. But it's hard to live up to some people's expectations, which [I] wasn't cut out to be. I didn't go to school to be "Rodney King" and [be] beat up by cops and thrust into the limelight. It's taken years to get used to the situation I'm in in life and the weight it holds. One of the cops in the jail [in a later encounter] said: You know what? People are going to know who you are when you're dead and gone. A hundred years from now, people still going to be talking about you. It's scary, but at the same time it's a blessing.

Captain Sensible (I think) on touring behind Music for Pleasure with Lol Coxhill:
"The only good thing that came out of the album for me was Lol Coxhill.
He was really funny. He walked in with these two life-size kiddies' puppets,
one on roller skates and one in a pram. They had names and he was leading
them along. He'd consult them. He was so brilliant. He did some gigs and
being a teacher too, he'd sit there marking papers onstage with these books
on his lap while all the mayhem's going on around him."

Joe Kubert, master comic book artist
He was one of my favorites as a kid, and I have much more appreciation for his work now as an adult, especially his primitive man stuff like Tor. His sense of anatomy and storytelling through pictures was what made a huge impression on me, he was kinda DC's John Buscema. I'm really saddened I'll never get to meet him, was hoping I'd get to see him at a con somewhere and thank him in person for igniting my lifelong passion for comic books. Some of my first comics were reprints of Sgt. Rock books from the 60s and 70s, still have them.

I'm not sure if anyone on this board is familiar with this guy or not, but I just found out the other day that Mankato's resident weird old punk dude, Punk Rock Freddie died last week. Dude was an easy target, much in the same way that Scott Seekins is here, but by all accounts was just a really good, nice old guy that was around everywhere all the time.
He was mentioned super-briefly in that sorta-recent City Pages article about Minneapolis cops looking up peoples' personal information for fun and for harassing babes. I guess they couldn't get enough of the fact that he actually legally changed his name to Punk Rock Freddie. Whatever it takes, I guess.

west banker, true punk rocker, had probably attained local weirdy status by now. he was really fucking smart and loved to mess with people. if you met him you probably met him at hard times.
i don't want to turn his death into a thing about alcoholism, but anyone who has known him saw the toll alcohol took on him. lots of his friends preceded him in death due to addictions or accidents, and lots drifted away when they got sober. he still had a devoted group of friends that he looked out for and who looked out for him.
even when he was homeless and he didn't have shit, he gave me a plastic coffee mug, because he had two, so i didn't have to keep getting to-go cups. i used it for years until it broke.

Third in line for the presidency, Sen. Daniel Inouye, aged 88.
Bears a cut and paste ( from Wiki)
On April 21, 1945, Inouye was grievously wounded while leading an assault on a heavily-defended ridge near San Terenzo in Tuscany, Italy called Colle Musatello. The ridge served as a strongpoint along the strip of German fortifications known as the Gothic Line, which represented the last and most dogged line of German defensive works in Italy. As he led his platoon in a flanking maneuver, three German machine guns opened fire from covered positions just 40 yards away, pinning his men to the ground. Inouye stood up to attack and was shot in the stomach; ignoring his wound, he proceeded to attack and destroy the first machine gun nest with hand grenades and fire from his Thompson submachine gun. After being informed of the severity of his wound by his platoon sergeant, he refused treatment and rallied his men for an attack on the second machine gun position, which he also successfully destroyed before collapsing from blood loss.
As his squad distracted the third machine gunner, Inouye crawled toward the final bunker, eventually drawing within 10 yards. As he raised himself up and cocked his arm to throw his last grenade into the fighting position, a German inside fired a rifle grenade that struck him on the right elbow, severing most of his arm and leaving his own primed grenade reflexively "clenched in a fist that suddenly didn't belong to me anymore".[11] Inouye's horrified soldiers moved to his aid, but he shouted for them to keep back out of fear his severed fist would involuntarily relax and drop the grenade. As the German inside the bunker reloaded his rifle, Inouye pried the live grenade from his useless right hand and transferred it to his left. As the German aimed his rifle to finish him off, Inouye tossed the grenade off-hand into the bunker and destroyed it. He stumbled to his feet and continued forward, silencing the last German resistance with a one-handed burst from his Thompson before being wounded in the leg and tumbling unconscious to the bottom of the ridge. When he awoke to see the concerned men of his platoon hovering over him, his only comment before being carried away was to gruffly order them to return to their positions, since, as he pointed out, "nobody called off the war!"

old school PA & Dubay fans will remember him, when he called they would play "Computer Love" by Zapp, in the article PA wrote above, I learned he went to a lot of timberwolves games and was well liked by flip and the player -- especially, surprisingly, Latrell Sprewell....
also he started the Lavelle E Neil - "Lah-vul" thing because of how his computer would pronounce Lavelle....La-vuhl eventually morphed into "Wobble"

Yeah, that's the one I just looked up to make sure it wasn't the same bassist.

Also, "disappeared while working on faster-than-light communication" is pretty ominous.

It's so rare that my interest in quantum technologies and acid rock intersect.

Pretty positive they figured out the disappeared Iron Butterfly guy killed himself. He drove his car into one of the canyons in LA, which can lead to them not knowing what happened to you for years on end. I know I read that somewhere.

Special RIP for the still-unnamed young woman from Delhi, India, who has passed due to injuries she sustained as the victim of a gang rape aboard a city bus on December 16.

i saw ms. bass at wilebski's doing Gospel back in the 80's. it was one of the most spine-tingling and inspiring shows i have ever seen. it would be a grave injustice to remember her as a one-hit wonder. i'd highly recommend picking up her great paula label album, entitled "free." love and respect.

Steve Kramer, former Contortion, leader of legendary Minneapolis group the Wallets, ultra-talented artist and total sweetheart died yesterday at the Sundance Film Festival. Steve was one of the first cool people I knew who got clean after substance abuse problems, and served as an important inspiration for me in my own recovery. I'm stunned.
Whoa. Too young. My sincerest condolences, hfon. They made quite an impression on me as a late junior-high/early high school awkward phase kid first exploring local music.
Thanks SC.
I gasped. I didn't know him, but I was such an early Wallets fan. The band was great, and Steve was an awesome keyboard player. He played it like percussion, very rhythmic.
I was working at First Ave when they filmed the Totally Nude video. Crazy shoot.
He always seemed very sweet and humble. The Contortions thing is sort of mind-blowing.. I think I heard he had fallen out of a window in NYC around that time and had facial reconstruction surgery.
Bummer.. too young and still cool.

Ah shit.. I didn't meet her until we opened for The Gun Club and she was playing bass. I had no idea at the time she was from here until we got to talking. She really liked our band and of course we loved The Gun Club. I didn't know she moved back here.
RIP. dang it.
fuck, that is really sad
I met Anny like three or four years ago she was walking down my alley at like three in the morning. we smoked cigarettes and talked for hours that night. and since then every time i would run into her it was like we were best friends catching up.
from the obituary
"With the sensitive soul of a writer and artist, Anny reveled in living life “on the edge” while also enduring the wounds that accompany such a journey. She often met life with a raucous and infectious laugh, revealing a wicked and quite wonderful sense of humor that enabled her to make friends with whoever she met, wherever she went. Moreover, Anny’s sensitivities led her to both love and relate with others in all walks of life. "
that is a very good description of her
i have history with anny, going back to early teenage boat people days. we shot smack together way back then, and we spent time together during a brief period of recovery for her a couple of years back. this breaks my heart.

Ed Koch. When I was a kid, this guy was the human embodiment of "Mayor." I remember my mom telling me during a drought that if I wasted water in the bath that Ed Koch was gonna get me. I was terrified of this man.
Nowadays I just think of him as a lovable old gay man who's attitude was to let New York be New York, before Disney Fascists, soda-cops, and Osama Bin Laden ruined the place.

WHOA Ed Koch. The end of an era.
RIP writer & translator Anselm Hollo.
And, oooof--anybody else reading a lot of stuff like this about Ed Koch today?
"Yes, Ed Koch did lots for New York. But he did NOTHING about AIDS because
he was too ashamed of who he was to attach himself to a "gay issue". There's
nothing heroic about that. RIP Mr Mayor - and say hello to all my friends and
fellows that died on your watch."

Whenever I see long lists of names like in movie credits or stats or something I think, "In a hundred years this will just be a huge list of dead people."
I guess what I'm saying is most people's lives are pretty short in the scheme of things and someday we'll all end up dead or geriatric so find something to get stoked about and try and have some fun before youre a motionless pile of tissue and bone.
Jeez dude, way to bring the thread down.

Sometimes when I watch old sitcoms I hear the laugh track and think about how most of those laughing people are probably dead now.

John Kerr. Had never heard of this guy, but his obit caught my eye a few weeks ago because of his refusal to play Charles Lindbergh because of his Nazi sympathies. I always fucking hated having to fly through the Lindbergh Terminal and was happy when the name changed.

I'm pretty sure the theater where Lincoln was shot was named after Nazi sympathized Henry Ford, so that's still a thing.

I was always floored by that snare roll that sets off "Murders in the Rue Morgue" as a young drummer (hell, still floored as an old drummer).
And, shit, he gave us one of the most iconic drum intros in heavy metal history, which I won't link to on YT because of stupid ads. You know the one though.
let us never forget alvin lee and ten years after's greatest contribution to the western world: providing a young norm coleman in 1969 with work as a roadie. norm would love to change the world even today, as his current employment with a republican think tank attests.
"sssh" was my absolute favorite album to get high with in high school, over 40 (gulp!) years ago. if "bad scene" and "stoned woman" aren't two of the best tunes of the day, i'll eat my "cricklewood green" poster!

I suppose it's not impossible that a 67 year-old man with a lifetime of unhealthy eating habits who was also the most persistent and defiant unsilenced critic of the Putin regime might just, you know, die.

Just found out a former boss passed away. Complications due to a seizure. He was less than a decade older than I am. He wasn't the best boss or most competent at running a company (at the time I worked for him) but he was a super nice guy. It's a weird thing.

sincerely though, hearing "I Touch Myself" for the first time was one of the craziest, most distinct musical memories I have--totally unique encounter rivaled by a few other tunes (maybe "Running Down A Dream," "Runaway," "Constant Craving," "N-Sub Ulysses"). It just totally destroyed what I thought music could or should be about (I was very young, but still). I would give anything to feel that sensation again.

You're right. I've actually been pondering it for days. I was an avid M.A.S.H. fan growing up and obviously a Diane Arbus fan as I got older and I'd never made the connection between the two. Nor did I realize he'd started out as a photographer. I bet he would have been a really interesting guy to talk to.

George Jones' Anniversary knocked my dick in the dirt when I was 19 and didn't know a whit about country music. One of the greatest voices in music, country or otherwise. I'm always happy to see his records in stores, knowing that someone will come along, not knowing all that much about country music, and decide to give that old creasy mug a chance, much like I did more than a decade ago.

You kids, swear to god. I came to George Jones same way all true country traditionalists did, via Elvis Costello.
