Ever since Savage Clone advised me to look at this site a while back, I use it to verify
if somebody's prices are nut-case or not. It works for me.

When something isn't listed here I get a little confused what to do next.

Speaking of which, who is selling their collection at HiFi Sound? Whoever you are, you are HILARIOUS.
Savage Clone
1/14/11 12:28 PM
When Shuga is in town, no one else compares in hilarity.

Discogs is so good. Best deal for sellers, easy comparison shopping for buyers.
I also like that the competition factor exists among sellers and does not wind up being between buyers.

As I said here, once discogs finalizes a way to load data from a spreadsheet, it is all over. They're working on it, a good friend of mine is their "guinea pig". There are a few issues that need to be worked out, but I'm not complaining. I have about 200 records up for sale there, I've sold 6 or 7 so far.

I've been selling hells of records on cdandlp.com . It took me 20 minutes to load 28,000 records onto their site, and it is now 30% of my business. Primarily French, Swiss, other European buyers, some Japanese too.

How, if you've found a title on discogs, but no one has it listed for SALE, can you mark it for sale and move it over to Markeplace?

1/15/11 8:58 AM
Yes, but the ones that have none listed for sale don't seem to have that function button. Or do you mean I look at MY collection, and choose 'sell'? Cuz I dont see that either.

Liz
1/17/11 9:27 AM

I tried to price higher accordingly, but....
1/17/11 9:29 AM
Savage Clone
1/17/11 9:31 AM
Shipping one LP to Japan or Australia can cost almost 20 dollars if you factor in the dollar for the mailer.
Registered mail costs another $11.50 on top of regular shipping costs.

Also, be sure to mark all packages as "gift" and decalre low values on the customs form! That is customary with international orders, because a lot of countries require that taxes be paid on high-value items when they are picked up at the post office. If you sella really expensive record to someone overseas and mark the actual value on the package, you might get an angry email.

1/21/11 3:40 PM
I know they're high, I mentioned that earlier.

They reflect a couple things: a) a bargaining margin, which is pretty flexible, b) my attachment to a particular release, and c) FREE SHIPPING.

For example, like Rae, I LOOOVE the nomeansno record; only willing to part with it for a high offer.

1/21/11 3:44 PM

if the point of posting the records is to sell them, he prices shouldn't be that high. I'd never want to make an offer to someone with near-shuga pricing ($16.99 for 'remain in light' ?).

take that as you will, but I do buy & sell on discogs often...

Liz - re: pricing: if I'm looking up a record and see it available through a few different sellers, I'll click on the ones with the lowest listed price. The "free shipping" part qualifies as small print that will probably go past most people. You might have more luck if you keep the shipping costs separate.

I appreciate the tips, I might reassess things in a bit.
Roaratorio
1/21/11 5:02 PM
and as far as haggling goes - if I'm buying something at, say, a record show, I might throw out a "hey, wanna round it down to $30 for the lot?" kind of thing when I'm ready to ring out... but for online sellers, I don't have much taste for a longer, drawn-out haggling process. The combo of decent shape / lowest upfront price is what I'll go for. That's just me, though. YMMV.

I'm closing in on 30,000 for sale on gemm.com & cdandlp.com. Partially thanks to sanpeeps, who started this thread.

There are quite a few who make their living selling records online, it's not a bad little racket. A few post here regularly. I'd guess there is 50 people in the twin cities who make their living selling records online.

There are A LOT of people who need help selling their stuff, I suggest if you are considering a career switch & want to work from the comfort of home, consider it. I've never heard of one person who sold stuff online seriously & quit to do something else cuz they didn't like it or it didn't work out for them financially.

My attempt to sell most of my CDs hasn't gone as badly as I was afraid it might.

I just sold a Gimmer Nicholson CD for $32, so I guess CDs aren't totally worthless yet...
2/04/11 1:11 PM
Considering that I've been hearing that CDs are worthless, I'm doing a lot better than I expected.. My Beatles CDs have been averaging around $8 and they're the ones with the shitty '80s mastering job. I just sold a Steve Hoffman-mastered Louvin Brothers compilation for $31...

I'm moving soon and planning to get rid of all of my CDs except for a couple of boxed sets (but retain all my vinyl, of course).

I'm debating going the discogs route or just selling the lot to a shop. I figure I can probably make significantly more money with discogs, but then I have to actually go and mail the bastards, which is a definite minus.

I haven't marked anything for sale yet, still on the data entry tip... been doing the whole collection, so it's taking a while. Finally getting to the end of "S" with the 12" records. Once I have the 7"s entered, i'll start marking things for sale. There's been a few items I was planning on keeping, but have realized they regularly go for amounts that I would be ok with... so I should have prolly 300-400 LPs up for sale in maybe a week or so. Tons of classic rock stuff, 60s/70s psych and hard rock.
3/13/11 11:09 AM
Oh yeah, and a TON of hip hop and drum n' bass.
Savage Clone
3/13/11 11:56 AM

As far as payment goes, what are yall using? I just signed up for Paypal, cuz I figure that's what most people are going to use. I suppose I'd accept money orders and cash and maybe checks, but is there a good alternative to Paypal? Or even if there is, does Discogs support it? This whole Paypal thing is kinda new to me, as I haven't sold records online in at least six years and it was all check and money orders. Yeah, I know Paypal's been around longer than that, I just wasn't using it, and it seems much more ubiquitous now.
Neil
3/17/11 2:39 PM
I've used PayPal for all of my Discogs transactions...
Savage Clone
3/17/11 2:43 PM
Paypal is the most common, but ask people to make a note with their payment saying which LP they are paying for or what their discogs handle is. It isn't like ebay, where things are automatically invoiced and linked in, and cross-referencing can be a bitch.
Makes efficient shipping much easier.

I also accept money orders, but most people seem to use paypal.

Q for yas:

How does one add a new entry for a various artists title? Normally, you'd click the link for the artist, and there's a link from there to add a new entry under that artist, but not so for those crazy "Various Artists". I have some french breakbeat and DJ battle records i wanna get rid of, and they're not in the database yet... looks like some of these break records go for some decent cash. See ya, DJ Spooky.

Shipping to other countries... is Canada a pain in the ass? How much for for an LP or two to Canada vs. the US? And the same for Europe and Japan?

Clone, you mentioned earlier that it usually runs about $20 for a single LP to Japan... how's that compare to Europe or Australia?

I learned enough about the Philippines and Indonesia from the letters page in MMR to know enough not to send anything there.
teddyruxpin
3/17/11 5:42 PM

So, I've sold a few things on here where the person who bought it bargained for a lower price and then I just removed it on discogs instead of it being sold. I feel kinda bad about not paying the fee, but MEH. Will I get in trouble?
Savage Clone
3/17/11 6:00 PM
You won't get in trouble.

$14 for Europe/Asia will average out over time. It's REGISTERED mail that gets expensive if people want it.

$8.00 for one LP to Canada, $10 for two.

Also, mark the packages as "gift" and declare a low value on customs unless they buyer specifically asks you not to. They can wind up paying pretty big taxes in a lot of places otherwise.

The thing they really get anal about is the name of the label being correct. For example, BMG Direct is a separate discogs entity from BMG Direct Marketing, Inc. If you don't link to the proper label, they'll shoot you a curt message about what needs to be changed. Its a pain in the ass.

If you offered the option of insured shipping and the buyer deliberately chose the cheap route, I say game over, cheapskate.
I have on some occasions split a lost order with polite buyers, but I won't be accused of not sending something because the post office lost it.
I once had a negative from a guy in Chile for a "lost" package, and it turned up back at work six weeks later with "return as unclaimed" in Spanish from the Chilean postal service.

He bought it again, and paid shipping again. He was totally cool about it.

I recommend making all buyers from Italy pay the extra $11.50 for registered mail, though. Worst postal service on earth.

gojohnnygo
4/29/11 9:57 PM
95% of "lost" packages are sitting in that respective countries' International Postal Customs Office, and records can take up to six weeks to arrive when shipped First Class International Mail b/c of this.

I cheerfully provide the customs tag# to the buyer, and recommend they call their local Postal Customs Office themselves. 95% of the time, I never hear back from the customer after that recommendation.

Most countries are just fab. Italy, Russia, & Brazil are slow, but I actually have minimal problems with those countries either since I started using this method.

No idea, I'm new to discogs too. The site doesn't seem to have the seller amenities that ebay, gemm, or cdandlp.com do. You're off in the wilderness, so to speak.

How does one use neutral feedback?

I've had a few people flake on orders (order something, then forget to or refuse to pay for it), and I have the option of giving them feedback. I don't necessarily want to give them negative feedback, for fear of retaliation feedback that would hurt my rating.

Does neutral feedback lower one's rating, or not affect it at all?
Rae
5/29/11 7:20 PM
Are you absolutely sworn off negative feedback? Because, I mean, that's negative behavior. If someone makes a commitment to buy from you and then reneges on that commitment, the feedback system exists to alert other sellers to that person's behavior. I can't think of too many things that a buyer could do that are more clearly negative than that (short of harassment or other extra-transactional bad actions).

To answer yr question, I believe neutral feedback is just that-- doesn't affect yr overall rating. Personally, I use neutral feedback in situations where I wasn't satisfied with the transaction but the person acted in good faith (for example, if I ordered something to find out that it wasn't actually in stock, but the seller was responsive and civil-- or similar situations).
Savage Clone
5/29/11 7:21 PM

When it gets right down to it, you really have no assurance that things are gonna go well through discogs either; it's more or less the honor system, and they are explicitly hands-off in their disclaimer wrt grievances.

I've had some pretty bad mailers (ever see ones from Japan?), but as long as it's out of sleeve/wrapped in newspaper or saran wrap and between cardboard it doesn't matter to me.

Shipping sucks.
gojohnnygo
7/29/11 8:00 PM
Shipping is what I do.

Buy some mailers from Bags Unlimited, and if you get into the game serious, get 'em from Uline.

Having good mailers is worth the money to keep a good reputation with buyers.

P.S. I use bubble wrap (vs. cardboard) as padding, it keeps the packages under 1 lb., and hence less expensive shipping rates.

O man, this dude is not happy about a record I sold to him. I listed that it was a still-sealed cutout and he bought it, but apparently the cutout is too big for him. Total whiny bitch! I didn't recall him asking for pictures, but he had did once, and I apparently didn't notice it. But he still bought it without seeing pictures.

"What did you sold me? You didn't tell me that the cover had a HUGE cut-out corner?
I mean i've seen record with punch-holes, saw-marks, small clipped corners but this is UGLY!! And i paid you $65 for this BUTCHERED record?
That's very shady and unprofessional, i trusted you and you sold me a record that is missing 1/3 of the cover almost!!"

To be fair, it is a large cutout, but it's probably 3 percent of the cover, not 33.333 percent.

And when I tell him that I'll refund his money if the record is still sealed he wont reply.

I wish I would have seen the email about sending him pictures, but he bought the record 14 hours after he sent me that first email so it's not like it was a big decision for him.

"You don't understand, i love this record and to find it sealed for me was like a "miracle", after you didn't reply to my request of pics i trusted you and i went ahead and bought it before somebody else did, problem is, i'm a vinyl collector and the cut-corner is just plain ugly, i want to keep it because the vinyl is (hopefully) Mint but i don't think the price is fair because of the huge cut-corner.

I'm really stuck here!"

So stuck that I told him I'd give him a refund if he sent the record back.
gojohnnygo
9/08/11 11:09 AM
Get used to it. There's lots of high-maintenance record buyers out there.

Once you get it back & refund the $$$, block him as a buyer so he can't order from you anymore, mark it up ten bucks & re-post it. Chances are you'll sell it for ten dollars more to someone who is grateful for it.

The additional ten bucks will cover the postage costs, and you'll have the smug satisfaction that you won in the long run. I've done this idozens of times.

gojohnnygo

Quite a few buyers use the "ask-for-a-discount-afterword" trick to get better pricing.

If I have a buyer who wants a partial refund, I use this scenario; the buyer has to name one discounted amount, and I get to agree to it or make them go for the return option. No negotiations after the one discount is named (this encourages the buyer to be reasonable and low with his discount amount request). If the buyer names a discount price too high for me, or then asks me to name the discounted price, I tell them to return it, we're though, then re-post it with the higher price once I get it back.

This puts the buyer in the position that he has to name a reasonable discount once, with no games of negotiating, otherwise he is required to send it back to me.

I don't block good customers, only ones who are obviously making a mountain out of a molehill, like the guy who is complaining the cut out mark is too big, and wants half off.

Yes.

I don't think it really opens up your stock to people who just won't use PayPal, but the only reason I was upset about it was that I was going to use my PayPal funds to pay for the record, and didn't even look to see what kind of payments the guy took before I clicked the purchase button. To enable the hiring of additional staff and improve our level of service to you, we're going to be increasing Marketplace selling fees effective May 1st, 2012.

Items sold on or after that date will have the following fees:

8% for Standard Listings
10% for Product Search Listings
(a $0.10 minimum fee will remain in place)

Invoices sent on or after May 1st, 2012 will now be due 10 days after the invoice date.

Increasing fees is something we try to do as infrequently and with as much notice as possible. Our last fee increase was almost 3 years ago in July 2009. As a result we've made a number of significant improvements to Discogs:

* grew our team from 4 people to 9 people
* delivered over 1,300 features and bug fixes
* increased conversion rate in the Marketplace by more than 84%
* more than doubled the number of servers, making the site faster and more reliable

This fee increase will allow us to:

* bring on additional software developers, so that we can add additional features
* hire a customer support rep based in Europe, so that we can respond to requests in a more timely manner, and in multiple languages
* improve our marketing efforts, to increase site awareness and expand our user base
* continue investing in new hardware to keep Discogs fast and stable

We sincerely thank you for choosing to sell on Discogs and we look forward to your continued success.

Anyone print shipping labels from home? With ebay it's pretty straightforward and media mail and first class international are a snap. With Discogs, I go through Paypal to print a shipping label and I can do Media Mail in the US, but for international there is no First Class option. I know that stamps.com allows you to print postage, but they charge a monthly fee ($16). There basic/free service doesn enable first class international.

Anyone have an idea on how to print postage for first class international orders that are recieved through Discogs.

I hate standing in line at the post office
Savage Clone
3/30/12 2:28 PM
I never figured out a way around that. Annoying.
Apparently Pitney Bowes offers some kind of shipping service that allows you to print out international shipping labels AND customs info. I don't do enough to avail myself, but for high-volume shippers it seems like a good option.
gojohnnygo
3/30/12 2:36 PM
endicia.com offers enough discounts to more than cover their $16.95 monthly fee, and you can run First Class International all the live long day. Delivery Confirmation in the USA is super cheap too, free for Priority in the USA.

Because I have been careless about keeping track of which titles I've sold through channels other than 'scogs, I have to give people "the bad news" pretty often. I feel like a twat, but if I just do it courteously, and sometimes offer a discount for their inconvenience, they usually are pretty forgiving.

Just do the 'item unavailable' thing and explain some bullshit.

also, THIS is the reason I price things higher than is normal sometimes, to make it worth my while and loss if it's an item I like.

I already have a data entry employee (who I might add is the best in town), and we will be putting most of our 'new arrivals' into the discogs system directly from here on out. We generate about 250 'new arrivals' weekly, and most of them will be on discogs as soon as they are listed. But this game is built on momentum- the residual effect- from data work already done, and that is now lost on discogs for at least a year or two. To make up the immediate 20% drop in sales, I will have to quickly load 2000 or so titles onto ebay, which I can do with a touch of a button. The problem with that is I now have to deal with the neanderthals at ebay and their not-as-vinyl-savvy customer base.

My plan has always been to wean gojohnnygo's livelihood from ebay over time. This decision by discogs will temporarily put us back in bed with the devil, but in the long run we will be more tied to discogs by having our 'new arrivals' all listed in their database. And that is a good thing, cuz discogs is definitely the future of this game.

FREE delivery confirmation for Priority USA packages, 15 cents for Media Mail, and general postal discounts on ALL shipments. They are of varying quality both condition- and music-wise. I'm gonna cherry-pick a few that I like (some cool jazz and big band shit), but will probably sell the rest.

What's a good way to price these? Do I just have to go one-by-one and google them? Or is Discoggin' the way to go? Halp, bored. I've never sold albums before other than, "Yeah, buddy, I'll give you that Skynyrd album for two of your Summits".

The hissing and popping throughout Sweet Leaf are louder than the music, but it gets better after that song. The hesher that owned it back when it came out must've really liked the wacky tobaccy and playing S.L. over and over. Overall, the whole album is super-quiet. So, is there a rule of thumb for condition of the record and its effect on price? I still have no idea what granny's albums are worth--except there is an unopened, factory sealed copy of Brenda Lee's first album (Decca DL 4039) in there. People are selling VG+ and M copies from $30-$70 on various sites. Is factory sealed worth more? Should I just go Shuga records on this bitch and put it out there for $150, or will everybody think I'm an asshole?

I really am clueless here. I'd give one of you experts an evening's worth of beer to go through this shit and see if any of it is worth anything.

Are 78s worth anything? Granny had some weeeird stuff. Old German classical music and local polka groups from 1930s New Ulm.

My rule is "sell it for what someone will pay SOON. Undercut all other prices for records of similar condition. Get that money.

Goldmine's rules say "a VG+ record is typically worth about half of a NM record."

7/25/12 5:27 PM
re: sealed records, they generally go for more than a "mint" lp. I wouldn't grade anything mint either. NM is top.

7/25/12 5:45 PM
M = sealed and new, perfect. Why hesitate to do that if it fits the bill?

I of course understand grading conservatively with anything that has seen the light of day, but there's a purpose to the M grading, right?

I am a bit diff from yith, as I'm not necessarily in the sales game to make quick ching. If it's something I like, then there's a price to pay for my losses, if not, then I'm still not usually in a hurry to move it. What's the rush?

Depends on how much you want the stuff taking up space I guess. "Priced to move" to me means "I really dont see any intrinsic value in this record."

Googling "hot stamper" led me to this website. Hardcore audiophiles are great at making record listening seem like one huge expensive chore.

ACTUAL QUOTE: "If you can't hear the difference on at least some of your records, it has to be one or both of the following. Either your system is not good enough to resolve these differences, which is sometimes the case, or, much more likely, you simply haven't trained your ears to listen for them. Not listening for pleasure. Listening like it's a job."

Gee, that sounds great. If I just listen for fun, I'll never care about a lot of this stuff, but if I put in a bunch of work, I'll start wanting to buy "super hot stampers" at $250 apiece. Where do I sign up?

I figured out how to catalogue my collection on Discogs this weekend, and I've already got more that 400 records entered. This is mindlessly addictive.

Anyway, I seem to remember someone telling me it's possible to get Discogs to estimate the value of records based on what other sellers have gotten for them. I'm really curious what the rough overall value of my collection is. Is this possible? If so, how is this done?

Not that I'm selling anything, I'm just curious.

I don't know, but I <b>do</i> know that there are some crazy quad people out there. My Marantz receiver does quad, but requires a special piece of decoding hardware to play the commercial quad releases. And those go for around $200 on eBay.

Marantz made the SQ Quad, which is different than RM Quad. Quad records vary in Quad format. Sweet, eh? I guess the reel-to-reel Q4 format is supposed to be the "audiophile favorite."

Most Quad records aren't that expensive, but the "good titles" i.e. actual Good Albums that are also Quad will get serious prices in nice condition.
Personally I have always been surprised not only by which albums get "the treatment" from labels (some of those "weird choices" are also true for MFSL/Nautilus pressings too), but by how many Quad records are in really crappy beat-up shape when you would think the consumer drawn to such a product (and willing to outfit their living rooms the a compatible system and the investment that requires) would tend to take especially good care of their stuff.

Huh.

I must admit, it's tempting just to pick up two more Paradigm Titans to see what Quad is all about.

that record's [production is kinda odd anyway, so it's hard to tell.

I've been tempted to check out some quad system somewhere (?), anyone have one?

Also, what is the difference between that and SS?

So, I'm too lazy to start listing these 78s, 33 1/3s, and 45s from Granny separately. Any of you guys interested in looking at the lot of them? Some of the 78s are Okeh, Mercury, Columbia, and Decca. Some look to be in good condition, some don't.

I will be beginning to sell a nice collection for someone else very soon. Started the account yesterday and will be listing roughly 100 titles weekly. Rock, new wave, punk, jazz, and many Mobile Fidelity and other audiophile pressings as well. Gonna be fun.
