Subtitle: Do we hope for a crazy zealot?

Starting a new thread because none of the others are about this specifically.

It's the night of the Iowa Caucuses, early in the returns process (we're not quite balls deep, more like "just the tip"). With 6% of precincts reporting, we're at:

Candidate Votes
Rick Santorum 1,229, or 24.2%
Ron Paul 1,204, or 23.7%
Mitt Romney 1,132, or 22.3%
Newt Gingrich 690, or 13.6%
Rick Perry 460, or 9.1%
Michele Bachmann 323, or 6.4%
Jon Huntsman 26, or 0.5%
Herman Cain 4, or 0.1%
Buddy Roemer 2, or 0%

Wowee!
1/03/12 8:08 PM
15.2 % of precincts reporting, and Paul, Romney, and Santorum are in a dead heat!

1/03/12 8:09 PM
There is no plausible scenario where Romney doesn't win the whole thing. As long as the people ahead of him are candidates like Paul and Santorum, it's just as good as a victory for him for now.

Damn. I spent 20 minutes looking for where I posted this..

I've been a little out of the loop the last 3 days, so I am not sure if Santorum is still surging, but I was thinking it would be either Santorum with another evangelical surprise (like with Huckabee) or the safety candidate, Romney. Ron Paul will end up in the 15 - 20% range, but not take it. Gingrich will be around 4 or 5% and Bachmann, Perry will be scraping the bottom.

.. only to remember I put that as a comment on someone else's status on facebook.

Well.. I'm dumb with where I put things, but good with ordering them.

This is a probably really good news for Obama. It seems like middle America Republicans don't really like any of their candidates in particular.

I watched part of his speech yesterday, not sure how I made it through.

Made all these promises about cutting taxes, and how any regulation over $100 million will be repealed, whatever "regulation over $100 million" means. What he was saying had no substance at all.

And then he went off on how Obama said these people were clutching their guns and bibles, and he gave some asshole-y hell yeah we are type response to that.

Ron Paul would probably hold his own in a debate with Obama to some extent. But, for better or worse, he will not be the Republican candidate. And then whoever is unfortunate enough to be the candidate will have to come up with something to say above the level of what would fly in an attack ad aimed at the very dumbest voters. Romney and Gingrich are obviously the only ones capable of this, to however limited a degree, and Gingrich appears to be about to go down in scandal.

Well to be fair, everyone already knew about Gingrich's scandals, has anything truly new come out, other than he asked his wife permission to date someone else (who we already knew he was boning) before they got divorced? I wonder what would have happened to his campaign if this was all new information?

Plus Cain straight up attacked his accusers, saying they were out to get his money or were hired by his opponents.

Plus Cain makes Gingrich look like a genius.

I find Gingrich to be one of the most fascinating American political figures in the last one hundred years. He's kind of like an incredibly smart Richard Nixon. At his heart, he is a consummate politician and I really think he loves the art of the deal. He often makes compromises, but he never, ever gives in on fighting his opponent for every inch. In other words, he will work with you, but he's going to make your life miserable by doing so.

It's kind of like Daniel Patrick Moynihan had a child with Ricahrd Nixon. Gingrich knows the divisive end game that Nixon played. He knows that politics merely getting enough support. So he plays to where he can get support. He's an intellectual. For a big part of his life, he has had to hide that from his electorate. He was defeated in first two runs for congress by an incumbent pro-segregationist Democrat in Georgia. Gingrich was painted as an intellectual carpet bagger from the East Coast in those campaigns because he was running to the left of this conservative Democrat.

Anyway, the guy is so vile in so many ways, but I am really fascinated by him.

2tru, Manny, especially against Kerry.

I remember one debate where Kerry was talking about this lumber company that Bush was an owner of and how they chopped down all these trees and were terrible for the environment.

His response: "Oh really? I own a lumber company? Want some wood? heh heh heh heh heh heh", and even I liked Bush at that point. He totally faced Kerry and made me want to talk about wood with him.
Mannyapolis
1/20/12 3:40 PM

The hope is that they degrade the party so much that not only do the stronghold feel uninspired to vote for their candidate but they sit it out and don't vote in general which will affect congress. Obama then needs to fucking ram a socialized health care bill through and not apologize. Sure, he'll lose the next mid-term swing but he won't even have to pander then since he'll not have to worry about being re-elected. This is my hope but I fear he'll try to play nice with the party clearly doesn't care about common sense.

I think they are dead on with this. I try really fucking hard to not swallow whole the analysis that comes from lefty blogs and publications but I'm beginning to buy the notion (that's been developing lately) that the Republican base only truly wants one thing - to fight mighty battles and destroy their enemies and lay waste to the countryside. That is, debt reduction or lower taxes or gay marriage bans or abortion-for-none would be nice for these people, but they are willing to compromise on all these as long as they can blow up some hippies or dark-skinned people or Muslims. Their greatest conviction is that if liberals or college professors or journalists or scientists like it - whatever it is - it must be destroyed.

It's true blue nihilism and I'm beginning to think this isn't just lefty propaganda. I almost can't wait for the general election so that I can stop considering this.

Rick Santorum on pregnancies caused by rape, what a colossal asshole. Just make the best of it, ladies!

SANTORUM: Well, you can make the argument that if she doesn’t have this baby, if she kills her child, that that, too, could ruin her life. And this is not an easy choice. I understand that. As horrible as the way that that son or daughter and son was created, it still is her child. And whether she has that child or doesn’t, it will always be her child. And she will always know that. And so to embrace her and to love her and to support her and get her through this very difficult time, I’ve always, you know, I believe and I think the right approach is to accept this horribly created — in the sense of rape — but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you. As you know, we have to, in lots of different aspects of our life. We have horrible things happen. I can’t think of anything more horrible. But, nevertheless, we have to make the best out of a bad situation.

bob dole goes ham on newt, amazing:

here

I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.

Gingrich served as Speaker from 1995 to 1999 and had trouble within his own party. Already in 1997 a number of House members wanted to throw him out as Speaker. But he hung on until after the 1998 elections when the writing was on the wall. His mounting ethics problems caused him to resign in early 1999. I know whereof I speak as I helped establish a line of credit of $150,000 to help Newt pay off the fine for his ethics violations. In the end, he paid the fine with money from other sources.

Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. He loved picking a fight with Bill Clinton because he knew this would get the attention of the press. This and a myriad of other specifics helped to topple Gingrich in 1998.

In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads and in every one of them Newt was in the ad. He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year. Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty ice-bucket in his hand — that was a symbol of some sort for him — and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it.

But since Santorum is winning, does he get to send more supporters to the convention? I don't think that's the case. When I went to a caucus in 06, I think they just barely got enough delegates. You have to be willing to sit in a room and not really do anything for a long time. And then you have to be willing to do that again at the state convention. Anyone else notice the fictional Obama, an alternate fantasy version, that Republicans have been creating in Republican talking points and campaign speeches?

Santorum on Obama in his stumbling and stuttering victory speech: "He thinks he knows better, he thinks he's smarter than you, he thinks he is someone who is a privileged person who should be able to rule over all of you."

Later on he said, "We have a President of the United States, as I mentioned, who is someone that believes he knows better. That we need to accumulate more power in Washington D.C. for the elite in our country to be able to govern you because you are incapable of liberty, that you are incapable of freedom. That's what this President believes."

This Obama personal/value rewrite shit happens most often, but there are also straight face lies and a rewritting of history coming from the right wing organization as well. They aren't just rewriting of things that people have long ago forgotten, but also things that only happened just weeks or months ago. For example, in an interview with CNN last month-ish, Eric Cantor (House Rep and Majority Whip from Virginia) blamed Obama for failing to raise the debt ceiling in time and said he was to blame for the credit downgrade.

As Cantor was a first-hand witness to the Tea Party wing's stonewall that blocked the passing of that, it absolutely blew my mind that he had the gall to tell such a bald-faced slanderous lie straight to the camera. As the Whip, it was his job to get his party members in line and pass the bill. He had totally failed. After the Senate version passed and then the House bill failed, Boehner and Cantor were stunned. They had no idea what was going on and had no explanation. He is just too much of a worm to admit to his own failure.

Here's a new one for me. As we know they like to demonize Obama through association (Bill Ayers). Well, I guess Glenn Beck and Newt have picked a new guy: Saul Alinsky. Who is Saul Alinsky? I'll have Bill Maher explain.. ‘Who The F@#k Is Saul Alinsky?’.
Finn McCool
2/08/12 11:56 AM
"All this was inspired by the principle--which is quite true within itself--that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying."

I think early on Romney sealed the deal with his serious rivals, like the fix was in. And by serious, I mean candidates that are actually electable. We haven't seen too many sitting or recent governors enter the race (Pawlenty & Rick Perry was the exception, and Pawlenty dropped out very early to support Romney) and if you look at recent Presidents (Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Carter), this is mainly the pool from which they come.

So Romney's the front runner, and he isn't worried about these other guys. But rank and file Republicans are simply are refusing to back Romney for whatever reason. Now it's so late, that it would be impossible to get McDonnell of Virginia or Daniels of Indiana to get in. They're stuck with a candidate that appears to be so weak, that he can't even persuade voters to him over blatantly ridiculous candidates like Santorum, or Gingrich. Say nothing of pure fringe candidates such as Ron Paul.

The Republican party has completely fucked themselves and it is hilarious. Romney will still be the nominee, and I'm sure a lot of Republicans will vote for him, but the question is... will he be any better at getting independent voters than he has been getting Republican voters. The worst part of it all for Romney, is that it doesn't seem to be that he's simply too centrist or too anything... he just seems to have a myriad of "unlikable" attributes.

All of this is great news for Obama. The economy will still likely be the key variable in this election, but the Romney campaign, which still has an 'inevitable' feeling in terms of the Republican nomination, is nearing a stall.

I am interested to see what effect an Obama/Romney race will have on the Congressional elections. While Obama has alienated some of the base, it does seem like Democrats will come out to support him in greater numbers than Republicans will for Romney, which probably means that the Democrats will cut into Republicans' majority in the house.

It's been a while since I looked at which senators are up for election. I can't recall what seats are considered up in the air and if either party is in a position to change the current situation in any major way.

Before Iowa, the conventional wisdom was that the Senate was surely going to flip to Republican and that the house was up for grabs. Exactly. You get a much better return on investment from buying state elections, or even Rep/Senate elections.

You are probably right Manny, and I am probably being a little too hopeful, but I will still say this:

Unless there is some new GOP candidate entering the picture, they are doomed to failure in this race. The parties have kind of flipped sides, it used to be that Republicans were all unified behind one person, even though he wasn't perfect to all of them. Now Democrats are doing that with Obama. He's far from perfect, but he's about as good as we are going to get from one of the two parties. The Republican party is so divided right now that I don't think it's too far out of the question that one of these four remaining candidates would run as an independent.

Can't remember if I said it in this thread or a different one, but the Tea Party appears to be hell bent on bringing the Republican party down with them, whether they understand that or not.

I agree and know of that statistic - something like 60% of Catholics surveyed - but all the same it's making the news cycle in a way that I wouldn't be surprised most people would eagerly opine against their own self-interest. I mean, this is the same idea-spin apparatus that replaced the word "inheritance tax" with "death tax".

That, or it sits in the news cycle long enough that the Obama admin steps away from that part of the mandate like they've probably already done by now...

Again, it's in the bag. Barring a major scandal or something like that.

The Latino vote shifting from Republican to Democrat was a big reason Obama was elected by such a wide margin. Republicans have only further alienated them since then.

Plus they are all digging up so much dirt on each other that Obama won't even have to do that. He can basically just run Newt's anti-Romney ads, and there are so many terrible, terrible sound bites from all 3 of the serious contenders, that he really only needs to use their own words against them.

All I can say is it's a good thing Karl Rove is not with any of these candidates. He's focusing on fucking up the country in other ways this time, and I'm sure he'll do a good job of it. As much as I hate the guy more than life itself, but it's hard to not at least respect his abilities.

This election will most likely still hinge on the economy, which at the moment is improving. That could all change depending on what happens in Europe. If Europe falls to shit, and there is still enough time for that to affect the US economy, Obama will be blamed because he is the incumbant and no other reason. Romney, as awkward as his nomination process has been... and as I wrote before it's been awkward, could still conceivably win this if the economy takes a dive.

I think you guys are underestimating the power of the super PAC. Even before they existed, remember how T Boone Pickens secret money turned a decorated Viet Nam war hero (but, yes a piece of wood candidate) into the lying coward opportunist and the privileged AWOL cokehead into a hero. That plus the ignorance (and stupidity) of approximately 50% of the voting public equals another Republican President.

I really, really want Obama to win and every sane, rational and even slightly informed voter should vote for him, but I don't think that describes much more than half of the voters.

Also, we may not see the effect of the super PACs as much here as elsewhere. I don't know where MN stands in the toss up state list, but the GOP is going to target a lion's share of all that super PAC loot on the toss ups. I am guessing that anywhere between 33 and 66% of all commercials will be super PAC commercials for the last half of September until the election. I bet Republican money will be at least 4 to 8 times more than Democratic money. That's enough to tilt any election (although not necessarily a guarantee).

My hope is counting on Romney's Mormonism and evangelicals prejudice to give Obama another term.

It seems to me that what once seemed evil and plotting is being revealed to be actually stupid and plodding. If for no other reason than its repetitiveness and hysteria, which eventually fails to reach a substantial number of even the dumbest, most suggestible people.

I mean, half the clever plan was to tell tall ridiculous lies at maximum volume around the clock. The other half was to suck gullible ideologues into wedge issues that the party has no serious intentions of acting on in any major way. Which is really just another way of describing the first half. That is still the plan, except unlike 2008, they don't have a likable war hero with a reasonable amount of folksy gravitas as their candidate.

Romney has misunderstood the conservative mantra about money. He has been told, and believes, that his wealth is an asset, because conservatives believe that the pursuit of wealth is tantamount to the American promise of the pursuit of happiness. He has "proven" that the American dream is real.

What he misses is that achievement of wealth (it doesn't hurt that he inherited a ton of money) in conservative circles runs neck and neck with the trashy, NASCAR culture that loves money but also has a large dose of somewhat contrary red neck chic in it. He doesn't need to show he's rich, he just can't be embarrassed by it. More importantly, he need to show that he has retained common man values (which he never had given that he was born into wealth).

“Everybody can’t be equal,” agreed Paul Murrow of Milford, MI seated nearby. “Somebody needs to do the manual labor.”

Clement’s husband, Stephen, said Santorum was right on the mark when he said that Obama wants to send kids to get college degrees so as to produce more liberals.

“It starts down at the elementary school level with all this bullshit about diversity, pardon my French,” he said. “Diversity and sensitivity and all that crap. That’s the stuff that needs to be taught at home not by my teachers. My teachers need to be academic: Math, science, history, social studies, that sort of thing and keep political opinions out of it, bottom line.”

Rick Santorum is almost totally defined by his homophobia, and then, distantly, by his staggering ignorance on nearly every subject and issue imaginable.

He also wears sweater vests, makes a deer in the headlights look like its in control of the situation, and trumpeted the routine and insignificant discovery of some forgotten Iraqi chemical weapons dump as a justification for the 2003 invasion.

Mitt Romney gets upset at Santorum for telling Democrats to take a page out of Romney's playbook

Sounds like Santorum miiiight pull off Michigan

I'm still of the mindset that it has to be Romney. But at a certain point.... who knows?

Rick Santorum! So absurd. I guess I'm rooting for him, despite the .01% chance he would win, which would be horrific.
Uncle Jam
2/28/12 10:52 AM
Michigan's primary is not winner take all. Their 30 delegates are split proportionately according to the vote, wouldn't be surprised to see it got 16/14 or 15/15.

Arizona IS winner take all, all 29 delegates go to the winner. I can understand why there has been a bigger focus on Michigan because it is a tighter race and Romney's home state, but Arizona has higher stakes and Romney has that one essentially wrapped up.

So Romney will likely get about 3 times as many delegates as Santorum tonight as long as he runs even with Santorum in Michigan.
mumblecrust
2/28/12 11:28 AM
Yeah but if Romney loses Michigan, the focus isn't going to be, "Well, he still got a few more delegates overall". It's going to be, "Holy shit, he lost again". The more he gets beat up and looks weak, the worse he's going to look in the next states.
Uncle Jam
2/28/12 1:10 PM
True, AND more importantly Michigan is his home state, so if he can't win there he probably stands to lose a lot of swing states who are part of Super Tuesday. 400+ delegates up for grabs next Tuesday.

Ehhh whateva.

Regardless of what you or I believe, the media story line is that Romney's home state is Michigan, and if he loses the media will be sure to mention that he didn't carry his home state, which surely won't help his chances next week.
garyburrito
2/28/12 1:45 PM
Super Tuesday's results are already plain - Romney wins Virginia (where Santorum and Gingrich aren't on the ballot), Mass., and Vermont. He is polling behind in (and likely loses) Ohio, Tenn. and Oklahoma. Nothing that happens in Michigan (barring a blowout) will change this. If Romney can pull out a win in Ohio, he's a lot closer to the nomination. Winning Michigan by a couple points won't win him Ohio. Nor will a Santorum squeaker (you're welcome) flip Mass for Rick.

This race will be as confusing two weeks from now as it is today.

I'm interested in seeing the numbers of Republicans that participate in the upcoming primaries and how they compare to 2008. As these candidates run their own negatives up, that has to drive down participation. That may be a good indicator of how many Republicans will be sitting home on Nov 4th.

Me: Go, Santorum!
Here's my take: I'm a money guy - doesn't matter what Santorum does now, the money is betting on Romney, so Romney will be the candidate. What will really do the trick is Santorum winning Michigan and a few more states, just enough to really galvanize his base. That way, when Romney ends up being the candidate after all, and losing to Obama, the lock step bottom-floor morons will become convinced, nay, TOLD BY THE LORD HIMSELF that it's because they didn't go with the absolute most frothing at the mouth diaper-wetting lunatic they could find. Minnesota was considered a battleground state in 08, not so much in 2012. I'm sure they're assuming the two amendments will rally people to vote who don't normally vote, and that those people will not be voting for Romney.
