Where should we take our honeymoon?

Okay, so I'm getting hitched, and we're trying to figure out what to do for our honeymoon.
Neither one of us ever get to go on vacations, and we want to have some good fun after our wedding at the end of Sept.

I really want to see Costa Rica, but I'm concerned about going down there in October, hearing that it's their rainy season.
We want somewhere warm with a beach, and the all-inclusive idea is pretty tempting. But we also don't have a shit ton to spend. We can't really go over $1500-$1800. Which I thought was going to get us way further than it seems to be.

Thoughts?

Holy cow, my best friend just got married and they have the same question. They're thinking Wales, and I was sayin DUDE get over to the mainland too if you're going to spend the cash getting across the pond.

ANYWAY.

I say Mexico, but not the tourist parts. Congrats in advance.

I don't know what it costs and I don't know what the weather's like then, but my sister-in-law just rented a house on St. John and loved it. I don't think that's high season, so hopefully affordable. Low traffic, beautiful. I'm anti all-inclusive, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I'd say Mexico, Tulum specifically. Still warm & cheap cerveza

I would love to go to Mexico, but my lovely future wife is neurotic and refuses because she doesn't want her head cut off.
5/23/12 2:13 PM
teddy, how long did you go for and roughly how much did it put you back? I'm just wondering if i'm totally shooting too low for what I'm hoping to get.
5/23/12 2:18 PM
J low, she's really interested in the Virgin Islands for sure, it's in our short list, but we're having a hard time finding a spot we could stay at.

Given your list of features and your wife's neuroses, stay in the country and go to someplace like St. Simon's off of the coast of Georgia, the Outer Banks of NC, or the Florida Keys. All three were beautiful, warm, uncrowded (or not as crowded as you'd think in the case of Key West), had stunning beaches, etc. Plus, you'll save a lot on airfare compared to going out of the country.

Try to stay away from all-inclusives. I've ranted elsewhere, but chances are very good you'll get stuck with bland food, watered-down and boring drinks, and a dull hotel room. The good all-inclusives aren't cheap, and the cheap ones aren't good.
5/23/12 2:23 PM
Oh, and they all have enough of a Caribbean feel that you'll feel like you've left the country, anyway.

There is also Tybee Island off the coast of Georga right out side of Savannah GA. Nice place, very beachy, won't be crowded at all in October & Savannah is a pretty cool place to visit for a few days.

senorleo: you asked about Mexico after you said yr wife-to-be wasn't having it. Should I put the time in to answering?

quick answer is actually 'no idea', haha. It was quite a number of years ago, but the town I mentioned was REALLY cheap and, um, quaint and interesting. Jack Kerouac lived there for awhile I guess. Expect kinda a lot of epat retirees though, if that sort of thing bugs you.

Someone just suggested Nigril, and after looking at things, and how cheap tickets are to Jamaica, we are really considering it. It's easily our top pick now, and we might call and make reservations here later this week.

I was in Costa Rica in June--start of the rainy season. It's way cheaper and tropical rains are light and fast. That said, I also like rain.

two of my friends who got married in November just spent January-February in Costa Rica as their honeymoon... I've never been but looking at their pix makes me want to go there so bad. The tickets are the most expensive part, and they said they spent under $5 a day on meals, drinks, fun, etc .

Check out Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. Some friends of mine used to run a yacht out of there. Beautiful, and they have plenty of stories of doing fun stuff like driving along the beach while drinking tasty beverages, diving in the Carribean, and eating delicious food all day and night.

I have travelled a fair amount but Jamaica was the only place I ever really felt truly scary hostility. It could have been just where I was at (near Montego Bay) but there was like this sort of put on "ya mon" Bob Marley thing in all the tourist areas/resorts but as soon as you step into town it was like "what the fuck you doing here white boy, we're gonna fuck you up." I wouldn't go back. Plus its like the resorts are basically little islands of priviledge with extreme pverty all around in between (which probably describes a lot of desinations)
monsieurlion
5/24/12 12:14 AM
Yeah, man. After finding a beautiful, non-touristy hotel in Negril, I have heard nothing but awful things about the town outside of resorts. It doesn't sound like we can do a ton of exploring on our own without getting swarmed on by everyone. Not that we're looking for someplace pristine, but I want to be able to walk down the beach and not get hassled every five minutes.

Now I'm really torn and am considering Costa Rica again. Jamaica just sounded much better in theory and finances.

monsieurlion, I would go to County Cork Ireland for selfish reasons.

My better half is actually Irish, but she's been before and we both want to go somewhere we've never experienced.

I should mention that the only "vacation" i've been on in the past 10 years was 3 days in vegas 5 years ago... So i'm really looking forward to this and just don't wanna fuck it up

Have you thought about Belize or Guatemala? Or Aruba if those places seem a little rough around the edges.

Or if beaches aren't a necesity some of Northern South America is lovely and not too expensive to get to - i.e. Ecuador, Peru or Columbia
pee. yay.
5/24/12 11:22 AM
Where is Columbia?

5/24/12 11:41 AM
This is dumb. I can't even decide what shirt to wear in the morning. We were all for Jamaica but we want to be able to explore and go on some adventures, and we're hearing a lot of negative things about venturing out on your own.
I'm still trying to find something we can afford in Costa Rica. I'm tempted to book a flight down there and find a hotel we like once we're there.
We're looking into Belize for now, too.

So, Belize is too damn expensive, but we've found some pretty killer places to stay in costa rica for cheap. And I've learned that October is not very rainy as long as you're on the Caribbean coast. Here's what we're debating between.

1st choice, but no pool. and we'd have to wait an extra week than what we were planning.

very close second. swim up bar, but a bit further to the beach.
5/25/12 10:34 PM
Also, I was unaware that Carnival in Limon is the week after we planned on going, so we might push it back and spend a night in Limon getting crazy.

I think I got it. We are going to Costa Rica. Flying into San Jose and staying here for the first 2 nights. Then it's off to Puerto Viejo to stay at this small little bungalow in this little "resort" I posted earlier, with the pool.
Hopefully we won't get too much rain. And we get to see lots of monkeys and dolphins.

We are getting married at the end of September at the Como conservatory.
We are actually having the reception in the clown lounge, and I'm Nikon all
the bands to play the upstairs that night as well, so people who we couldn't
fit into the reception can still come out and have a good time!
5/30/12 9:57 AM
Now I just have to figure out which bands I want to play upstairs.
Mr. and Mrs. Yeti will be djing the reception downstairs!

So we slept on the plane tickets for Costa Rica. I think we're going to save it for an anniversary and buy two tickets for miami, rent a car, and drive down to the florida keys. it'll save us over a grand in airfare and passport renewal, which i'm sure we'll blow on super expensive food and lodging, but it seems to make more sense.

Anyone ever been?

You made a great call, monsieurlion. My wife and I honeymooned in New Orleans, Miami, and the Keys. Did the same thing you did: Flew into Miami, rented a car, and hit the Keys after five days in NOLA. You'll frickin' love it!
