The evening concludes with Music for Films, featuring Electric Masada and experimental American films from the Walkers Edmond R. Ruben Film and Video Study Collection chosen and scored by Zorn, including Maya Derens Ritual in Transfigured Time, Joseph Cornells Rose Hobart, and Kenneth Anger's Eaux de' Artifice, as well as Harry Smiths Film #16-OZ: The Tin Woodsmans Dream and Marie Menken's GO, GO, GO from Anthology Film Archives.

I assume the show is sold out, right?

When joe holiday and I got to see Masada in 2001, I remember the place was packed and I thought to myself, "Where did all of these Zorn fans come from? Every Zorn cd or album I have ever bought was in the used bins."

wowza, yeah i bought my tickets loooooooooong ago.
can't wait for sun o))) to hit the walker this summer

And that's no dis on JZ by a long shot. Maybe the older sophisticated jazz crowd were into it because it was Masada as opposed to Pain Killer or Locus Solus.
Carlos Slim

thats quite possible. i mean, you listen to news for lulu and then painkiller and it's quite a jump

Ticket(s) purchased. This is so far in advance I fully expect to be chatting with someone who will say "You should've gone to that Zorn show the other week"

Ribot once again! As much as that Torture Garden LP melted my mind some twenty-or-so years ago, I've realized that I'm pretty much only a Zorn fan when Ribot is involved. Seeing the Bar Kokhba ensemble play should be good. Most of the lineup looks good actually.

The Walker site mentioned that locals might be involved in this also. Kinda curious about that aspect of it all.

Rev. Mike
3/24/13 9:18 PM
They are saying "musicians will include" and Greg Cohen is listed, which makes sense since he is one of Zorn's go to guys and I am sure could ably handle anything thrown at him, but Dunn was the bass player for the Concealed and Nova Express recordings. Also, Enigmata had been listed at one point, but no longer, which also makes sense because Enigmata is Ribot and Dunn. I am just curious if there will be anyone else on hand to handle bass in addition to Greg Cohen.

Rev. Mike
4/07/13 2:07 PM
Zorn was in a good mood for the talk, not like in 2006 when he was distracted and almost derisive. He talked a lot about his attitude, approach, being stuck with the labels of "ironic" and "condescending" in regards to music, and his creative process and the inspiration of the library he lives in with his music, books, and art. He said he has never done drugs, smoked, or even drank coffee, but he understands as a band leader that he needs to take care of his band. If Saft needs some smoke, he can tell who is holding and points him that way, because Saft would probably buy from a narc. And if Ribot needs to get laid after a show, great. Great talk.

Ribot's main guitar was damaged in flight so he was taken to Twin Tone to get the Gretsch he was playing.

1st show ~70 min
Book of heads - I loved it. I am a sucker for the primitive silly guitar weirdness, and a big Chadbourne fan, and Ribot did it well. Guitar and balloons. Folks I talked to were not as impressed. Probably the most "difficult" section until the organ.
Hockey - a lot of fun to see, probably would not listen at home. But it was an honor to see theses early compositions. Zorn said he would maybe do Hockey at another show, but this was the only one of the 60th celebrations that he was planning on doing old stuff during.
Cobra - Mindblowing. This was where the entire day was made. Played 3 pieces, the first two in particular were amazing. My head was whipping around trying to catch all the interplay, cues, and partnerships. A real pleasure. I think my internal dialogue actually shut down.

2nd show ~90 min
Friedlander - very intimate performance. a nice beginning. loved it.
Masada string trio - Also very intimate, also loved it.
Bar Khoba - Another build throughout the show to main event. I was continually struck by my fortune at being able to see all of these ensembles. I never imagined being able to see these pieces. Zorn got them out there a few times, usually with Ribot taking the lead and whipping Baron along. Amazing.

3rd show - I guess Zorn did not feel the band was properly rehearsed so the doors did not open until after 10. Medeski and the strings seemed a little tentative at times, but were fully in command. Cohen, Baron, and Wollensen were rock solid. During one of the Nova Express pieces that got really out, driven by the percussion, and it was sublime. I fel the strings were not given enough space during the Concealed stuff, but they had been the work horses through the rest of the show, so no big deal.
When they came out someone asked "Where's your sax John?" which is what most were wondering I think. John replied "At home, MOTHEFUCKER!...NO, I left it in the back room and was gonna play it, but not any more...my fucking fans." etc. I was worried he was not gonna play sax because I had been told he was gonna play a bit at the end of each show, but thus far that had not happened. when they came back for the encore he announced that he, Cohen, and Wollenson would accompany the short film Aleph by Wallace Berman at the end of the show. So we got the full on hyper speed free jazz madness to end the show.

Organ
I was a little tired by this point, but the Hermetic Organ was a nice capstone. I loved the low bass rumbles that shook the whole church, then the color of a child finding noises to make, which would lead into sublime bridges and back into a rumble. Very much like a soundtrack piece.

Overall, one of the favorite days of my life ever. No exaggeration. I am grateful to have been able to see so much, and feel fortunate to live in one of the few North American cities where John will still play. It was worth the year wait in every way. I would say Friedlander worked the hardest the whole day, he was on stage for everything except book of heads. Wollenson was probably the star, just for his spirit and animation. And then of course Baron was the smiling prince behind the kit, following and laughing with John, playing his ass off. It was such a pleasure to watch so many world class musicians enjoying themselves and be reverent, but not precious. I cannot say enough about what a day it was.

4/07/13 5:37 PM
Rev. Mike summed it up great. I LOVED Cobra, Hockey was fun to. String trio was nice, Bar Khoba better....oh yes... I was thrilled to hear Ribot was playing something originally composed for Eugene Chadbourne at the first show as I'm a huge Chadbourne fan. Marc Ribot is an amazing player.... so were both drummers/percussionists... everyone seemed to be having so much fun. Loved the crazy sax freakout film thing at the end and the organ performance was quite nice. Yes... a great day of music.

4/07/13 7:54 PM
Rev. Mike summed this evening up very accurately so I appreciate not having to repeat everything here. Arrived mid-Ribot and nearly made a grand entrance by almost tumbling down the stairs in the dark. The usher threw me in the wrong seat which was a little embarrassing come the second set. Besides all that nonsense, I do agree with the above points. Cobra was fantastic, but I'm still trying to figure out how the whole process works. The strings - solo, trio, and ensemble - were all excellent. Bar Kokhba was sublime. Had to leave midway through the final set so I'm kinda bummed the surprise ending was missed.

It is nice that over the last couple of decades (ouch!) when I've seen Zorn perform, it's been something totally different each time. This one might have been the most restrained, but it didn't lack intensity. I do also love the fact that everybody seems to be having a genuinely good time while playing. It's all smiles and hugs all-around.

Did anybody else have their heart stolen by the mystery woman in the black dress? Exchanged some very minor small talk and should've chatted some more but I'm stupid like that sometimes. And by sometimes I mean a good chunk of the time.

I actually saw Ribot play a solo show at the Knitting Factory in 2000. Played mostly stuff from Book of Heads, including the piece with the balloons. It was cool, but for my money, he shines brightest doing his scruffy, skronky, somewhat bluesy and slightly inebriated take on Django Reinhardt.

made it to the organ show in the church. It was very very very satisfying. one of those things I had always wanted to hear, a strange secular piece on that sort of particular massive instrument, in that sort of setting.

reading this I wish I had seen more of the shows.
